TRD Off-Road ‘upgrades’

Separating the TRD Off-Road model from more workaday RAV4s is a range of enhancements. Moderately broader fender flares help give it a bulkier, more planted appearance. Front and rear, the bumpers are new, and there’s a different grille up front. The overall look is cohesive and eye-catching, even if it’s quite similar to what you get with the more affordably priced Adventure-trim version of this Toyota.

As for actual, substantive upgrades, they’re fairly minor. These RAV4s roll on special 18-inch wheels that are treated to a matte-black finish. Providing enhanced traction in a variety of conditions are a set of 255/60R18 Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires. Their sidewalls may scream Rubicon Trail, with their squared-off shoulders and blocky lettering, though the actual tread pattern is much less aggressive and better suited for everyday road use.

Behind those upgraded wheels is a special suspension setup. The RAV4 Off-Road model features twin-tube shock absorbers, red springs for a jaunty look should you bury your face in a wheel well and new bump stops that supposedly provide better body control when tackling rugged terrain. With Michigan still largely locked down, I haven’t been able to put this claim to the test by doing some proper off-roading, but this vehicle does keep an even keel when faced with potholes or while tackling pockmarked dirt roads.

Working in conjunction with those all-terrain tires is a standard torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system. With a couple of user-selectable settings for different conditions, this arrangement can send up to 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear axle and it can apportion that twist from the left side to the right as needed for improved handling. The rear section of this driveline can also disconnect when not needed to help improve fuel economy.

The TRD Off-Road comes with slightly beefier tires, but no added ground clearance.

Curiously, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road has no increase in ground clearance. It’s got the same 8.6 inches you get in other models. If it’s designed for trail crawling as Toyota indicates, shouldn’t it have more? Also, there are basically no skid plates protecting this vehicle’s delicate underbody, so if you do decide to take one of these from the mall to Moab, be careful. I don’t want to see you rip out a brake line or puncture the fuel tank while traversing rough terrain, and you certainly don’t want to pay for associated repairs.

Об этом также стало известно еще в прошлом году, но мы готовы повторить сию печальную новость для всех любителей сэкономить на топливе: гибридов для России предусмотрено не будет!

А как было бы классно. Ведь что такое гибридная Toyota RAV4? Это абсолютно новый кроссовер с электрифицированным силовым агрегатом, сочетающим в себе 2,5-литровый бензиновый двигатель с двумя электромоторами. Комбинированная мощность силовых агрегатов аж 222 л. с.! При этом столь мощный кроссовер будет еще и экономичным.

Впрочем, если зайти на сайт quto.ru, в раздел 2019 Toyota RAV4, то предварительно увидим такую картину:

Может, в будущем планируется сборка бимоторных компоновок? Кто его знает, но официально об этом молчок.

И ладно бы только гибридов не было в России, так ведь и дизелей тоже не будет. По крайней мере пока.

Новые бензиновые двигатели (Плюс)

А вот что касается бензиновых моделей, RAV4 будет комплектоваться одним из двух новых бензиновых атмосферных двигателей Dynamic Force. Объемом 2 л и мощностью 150 л. с. и 2,5-литровым силовым агрегатом на 200 л. с. Об этом пишут такие издания, как «За рулем» и «Auto.mail.ru».

При этом, что примечательно, о гибридах в СМИ также ни слова. Лишь упоминание некоторых особенностей моторов вроде системы газораспределения VVT-iE на впускных клапанах и комбинированном впрыске топлива D-4S. Хотя, если сравнить с данными, опубликованными на сайте quto.ru, 2.5-литровый движок должен сочетаться с гибридной версией.

В общем, не совсем понятно, что к чему. Но тот факт, что под капотом будут именно вновь спроектированные моторы, вселяет надежду на их более умеренный аппетит и высокую отдачу по динамике.

Toyota RAV4 TRD – кроссовер, который можно называть внедорожником

На открывшемся вчера Чикагском автосалоне журналисты заприметили одну очень интересную автомобильную новинку. Речь идет о новом «заряженном» брендовым тюнинг-ателье «Toyota Racing Development» японском кроссовере Toyota RAV4 TRD. Надежный, компактный, а теперь еще более красивый, спортивный и быстрый!

Кроссовер РАВ4 TRD оснащен более выносливой полуспортивной подвеской, отлично подходящей для плохих дорог. Ее разработкой занималась гоночная команда «Rally RAV4 Race Team». На внедорожнике (теперь RAV4 в версии TRD можно так называть официально) стоит продвинутая система векторизации крутящего момента «Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive», злые офф-роуд-покрышки Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail All-Terrain и более легкие 18-дюймовые алюминиевые эксклюзивные колесные диски «TRD», окрашенные в матовый черный. Также эксклюзивный экстремальный TRD отличают уникальные элементы экстерьера и интерьера.

Все доработки должны улучшить проходимость и возможности на более злом внедорожье.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the RAV4 prioritizes ergonomics and cubby storage. A useful shelf spans the dash and complements the large center console. The version we tested featured a mix of soft-touch surfaces and nice plastics. The base trim, called LE, is quite spartan and comes with cloth seats, a plasticky steering wheel, and single-zone manual climate control. On the next-step-up XLE, Toyota throws in a few perks, but there’s much more to like on the XLE Premium, including faux-leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a stitched and padded dashboard and center-console armrest. The RAV4’s rear seats are easy to stow, and they fold to a nearly flat position, opening up the cabin for cargo. We fit 10 of our carry-on suitcases behind the rear seat and 22 with it folded. The Nissan Rogue matched the RAV4 here, but the Subaru Forester beat it by one in each metric.

Is it worth the price?

Whether in more-everyday trim or range-topping TRD Off-Road form, I can’t say the RAV4 is my favorite small crossover. It competes in a segment rife with excellent alternatives. The Honda CR-V is superb, Subaru’s Forester is extremely well done and the Mazda CX-5 practically feels like a luxury car. Still, even though it may not excel in any particular area, this Toyota is good at just about everything. It’s well built, it’s spacious inside and it offers plenty of tech, plus it’s refined, economical and attractively priced.

Including destination fees, an entry-level RAV4 LE starts at just about $27,000, which is more than fair these days; however, my generously optioned TRD Off-Road test model rings up for around $41,500, a price that’s much harder to swallow. Yes, that outlay does get you some additional capability, but truth be told, it’s probably not worth what Toyota is charging.

Overview

From spartan to swanky to outdoorsy, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 offers something for almost everyone, which earned it an Editors’ Choice award. The base LE covers the economical end of the spectrum while the well-equipped Limited and TRD Off-Road models offer impressive amounts of equipment aimed at two very different types of buyers. No matter which trim you choose, the RAV4 comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard but all-wheel drive is optional on the LE, XLE, XLE Premium, and Limited, and standard on the Adventure and TRD Off-Road models. The RAV4’s square-jawed looks are inspired by the 4Runner SUV and Tacoma pickup truck, but its car-based construction delivers a smoother ride than either of those trucks. Interior accommodations are spacious and the materials chosen are durable, but those buyers seeking modern-day convenience features such as power-adjustable seats, push-button start, and blind-spot monitoring will want to avoid the entry-level model.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2021 RAV4 uses a 203-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive remains standard, but Toyota now offers a choice of all-wheel-drive systems, dependent on trim. The Adventure model we drove was equipped with an all-wheel-drive system that can disconnect the rear axle when needed to improve fuel economy. At our test track, the RAV4 proved to be quicker than its predecessor: We recorded a 60-mph time of 8.0 seconds with the 2019 model and 8.3 seconds with the 2018. The dutiful four-cylinder can be noisy, especially during highway-passing attempts, and the transmission on our test vehicle seemed to stumble when called upon for a downshift. The RAV4 Hybrid—reviewed separately—snapped off an even quicker 7.4-second 60-mph time in our hands. The RAV4 feels solid and stable when cruising the interstate and holds its own when pitched into a twisty section of road, but it doesn’t inspire the same confidence as our segment favorite, the Mazda CX-5.
